Former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Babbin’s quip Going to war without France is like going deer-hunting without an accordion has inspired the title for my comments on French ‘cooperation’.

NATO has agreed to support Turkey’s original request for defensive support. How this this occur? The decision was removed from the political component of NATO – which has 19 members including France – to the Defense Planning Committee. Fortunately for the other eighteen members, France withdrew from this committee in 1966. Without French involvement, the other eighteen nations quickly agreed to support Turkey.
