Greatest Presidential Victory Since 1988
Barring any last minute surprises, it appears that President George W. Bush has won the greatest political victory of any presidential nominee since 1988, where his father, George H.W. Bush also won the votes of the majority of Americans along with the majority of the electoral votes.

For all his charisma, Bill Clinton never managed this feat. While he won the important electoral votes necessary for election in both his campaigns, he only received a plurality of the popular vote. Neither Bush nor Gore won a majority of the popular vote in the 2000 election where Bush won enough electoral votes to be elected. America is a divided nation, and we may stay this way for a while, but we are more united today than we have been since the 1988 election.

Not knowing where to put this:

From where I sit, the people who (unintentionally) gave that election to Bush were Gavin Newsome, the mayor of San Francisco who started the same sex marriage ball rolling and the Massachussets jurists who gave it a huge boost.

This led to numerous Marriage Definition amendments in Ohio and other states. Those all seem to have gone down by 2:1 or 3:1 but what they really did was to get newly registered and rarely voting people out to vote against the amendments. That was the bulge in numbers voting and that is what IMO put Bush over the top, particularly in Ohio.

Actually my view of gay/same-sex marriage is, I am sure, different from the Admiral's view. I feel marriage has two meanings: a religious ceremony (at least in my religion) but also a package of legal and civil rights and duties. Regarding those civil rights and duties "leave to Caesar that which is Caesar's" and it is perfectly OK by me to have legal marriages. In my religion there are marriages that are recognized by the state but not by my religion. So what?

But the irritating thing the left did regarding same sex marriage was to try to force the issue on an unwilling (2 or 3 to 1 unwilling) public.

So my heartfelt thanks to Gavin Newsome who told people that he could grant marriage licenses even though California law said he couldn't and to the Massachusetts court justices who ordered the Massachusetts legislature to pass laws to their liking. That arrogance is what made Bush president for a second term.
